To be upfront, I am not someone with any claim to theological or spiritual authority. If you should happen upon these words, the only thing I can say in their defense is that they come from over twenty years of an earnest search for truth through prayer, study and thought.
When I finally took a hard look at what my structured religion said I believed two decades ago, I found that I had no idea why I would believe these things. They were taught to me as a child, accompanied with great pomp and circumstance, so I had stuck by it. But, I found that, upon closer inspection, it made no sense to me.
So, I broke down my faith into a form of agnosticism and slowly built up a real faith through concepts that did make sense to me. Now, I have returned to a form of Christianity that doesn’t contradict much with the forms practiced in churches today, but it gives me a new perspective that I can embrace.
I don’t expect anyone to see things as I see them, but maybe some of these words will help someone who is thinking about their faith and what they really believe.
Now that I’ve said that my faith doesn’t contradict much with the forms practiced in churches today, let’s begin with one of the issues where my beliefs do contradict with the more established churches. That issue concerns new revelation from God which is new information worthy of being included alongside scripture and deemed, as scripture, to be from God. No, I do not consider myself a prophet or anything of the sort. Anyway, in Catholicism, new revelation from God is acceptable when it comes through those duly appointed by the Church hierarchy, then is subsequently validated by the hierarchy and then approved by the Pope. Most Protestant denominations do not believe in new revelation, but believe that new teachings may be developed from what has already been revealed in scripture.
These philosophies towards new revelation from God are prudent and necessary for structured belief systems. Would-be prophets could leave churches in a state of flux or lead some to tragedy as in the cases of Jim Jones and David Koresh. Corrupt Popes produced “revelation” that led to policies that eventually led to the creation of the Protestant movement.
But, are there really no new revelations as Protestants claim, or, is it limited to a chosen few as Catholics claim?
One thing I am certain I’ve learned is that God’s ways are not our ways. There are those who claim not to believe in God’s existence, but when they seek truth, they find a piece of God. Whether they recognize Him when they find Him is another matter.
Science has forced most of the world to expand our view on where our little planet fits in this universe. The explosive deaths of stars created the elements that make life here possible. The deaths of creatures almost unbelievably large left remains that transformed into oil that has given us the means to advance our technology to the point where we send objects outside of our own atmosphere. Einstein’s famous formula helped us to understand how atoms can turn into energy.
Human application of these found truths may be corrupted, but these truths help us to see how God refines the universe into more and more useful elements for creatures such as ourselves to use.
Now, I understand that when we speak about truth and God we tend to focus on the truth that God is real and Jesus came to save us, but the Gospel of John presents a much deeper view of truth. The opening of this gospel presents Jesus as the Word of God who was with God and who was God. Jesus states in this gospel that he is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The Word of God is multi-dimensional. He is food and water in the spiritual realm, an incarnate being and all that is spoken by God into this universe and is good and true. The Word of God, as we see in Genesis is all that God deemed good during creation and beyond. The Word of God contains all that is Truth, not just spiritual concepts.
Let’s look at a simple example of multi-dimensional truth. There is an experiment conducted with light, two slits in some material and a target that shows where the light hits. If the light is observed at one point, the light will hit the target as it would be expected if the light were a wave. However, if it is observed at another point, the light will hit the target as if the light were composed of particles instead. The observation determines the form of the light. Why would this be if the universe were not built for observation?
Who was there at the beginning of the universe to observe the first light of the Big Bang?
Genesis answers that question. “God saw the light was good”. God wasn’t experimenting and making a passive observance and judgment, He was making the light good by his observation! So, we see that this scientific truth of the physical realm ties to the spiritual truth of God’s reality and His work in the universe and that truth is really multi-dimensional and can be approached that way.
So, for me, God is still revealing His knowledge to us in this time. It did not end two-thousand years ago, nor end up in the hands of a select few. He continues to expand our knowledge and our perspective through scientists whether or not they know that they are His prophets in this age.
